Crocheting a lace bracelet with a metallic crochet thread will give the piece a sparkly look.

Broomstick lace is a crochet technique that uses large loops with stitches crocheted around them to create a lace pattern. This technique is traditionally done with a very large knitting needle to wrap the loops around, but can be done without the needle in order to simplify the process. With a fine crochet thread, you can create a beautiful lace bracelet using the loop stitch style of broomstick lace.

Instructions

    • 1

Chain a foundation chain that is long enough to wrap around your wrist and is in a multiple of five stitches. Round up to the nearest multiple of five. For example, if a chain of 18 stitches fits snugly around your wrist, round up to a foundation chain of 20 stitches. Join the round with a slip stitch.

    • 2

Work a single crochet stitch in the first stitch of the round, then chain one. This mimics a half-double crochet stitch and is the way you must start each round of this piece. Whenever the first stitch of a round is a half-double crochet, work a mimicked half-double crochet. Work a half-double crochet in each stitch around and join the round with a slip stitch. Work a mimicked half-double crochet in the first stitch of the next round.

Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and draw the loop through. Pull the loop up long so that it is about 1/2-inch tall. Repeat the loop four more times, for a total of six loops on the hook, five long loops and the beginning chain. Yarn over and pull that loop through all the loops on the hook, then chain one to secure everything. Work five single crochets through those loops. This is a lace repeat. Work lace repeats until the end of the round and join the round with a slip stitch.

    • 4

Half-double crochet in each stitch around, skipping the chain stitches between each lace repeat, then join the round with a slip stitch. You can choose to fasten off your work now or work another round of lace repeats and another round of half-double crochets. Be sure that the last round of the piece is a round of half-double crochet stitches. Fasten off your work and weave in the ends with a tapestry needle. Trim any long yarn tails down so that they do not show once woven in.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can choose to work this pattern flat rather than in the round, then add a button or snap for a more snug-fitting cuff.

  • Use a metallic crochet thread, flexible jewelry wire or thread with pre-strung glass beads to give your piece a boutique jewelry look.

  • Try not to crochet too tightly, as the bracelet will not have enough stretch and be difficult to push your hand through.
