If you serve cupcakes instead of a cake at the babe shower, use a tiered cupcake stand.

Celebrating the birth, or soon-to-be birth of a child with a baby shower is often a once in a lifetime experience for some mothers. A baby shower is full of friends, family, presents and cake. Cakes are often displayed on cake holders placed atop a decorated table. Decorate the table in baby- and pregnancy-related items, including a tablecloth, napkins and balloons. If you know the sex of the baby, use appropriate colors -- blue for a boy and pink for a girl. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Position the table in a location of the room where everybody can clearly see it. Just as the cake serves as the focal point for the cake table, the cake table serves as the focal point for the room in which the baby shower is held. Use a wood kitchen or a sturdy, metal folding table. Don’t use a flimsy table that can’t support the weight of a large cake.

    • 2

Lay a tablecloth on top of the table. Baby- and pregnancy-related tablecloths are found at party supply and craft stores. Use a tablecloth that matches the sex of the baby. If it’s a boy, use either a plain, blue tablecloth or one that has boy-friendly pictures like baseballs, cars or trains. If it’s a girl, use either a plain, pink tablecloth or one that has girl-friendly pictures of princesses, unicorns or butterflies. Use generic designs like baby blocks or baby bottles if you are unsure of the sex of the baby.

    • 3

Position a cake stand in the middle of the table. A cake stand is often made of stainless steel or plastic. Cake stands are available in many shapes and sizes, including circles, squares and rectangles. They are purchased at party stores and stores that sell bake ware and cookware. If you don’t have a cake stand, make one yourself by wrapping gift or clothing boxes in baby-related wrapping paper and stacking them on top of one another.

    • 4

Put a doily large enough to cover the surface of the cake stand on top. Put the cake on top of the doily.

    • 5

Fill two glass vases with colored marbles, tissue paper or strips of ribbon. Use colors that correspond with the sex of the baby. Place the two vases in the rear corners of the table, one on each side of the cake. On a round table, center the vases between the cake and the edge of the table.

    • 6

Inflate a variety of colored and baby-related party balloon with a portable helium tank. Tie the end of each balloon into a knot when it has been filled with helium.

    • 7

Tie a piece of colored ribbon to the knot of each balloon. Use pieces of ribbon long enough that the balloons float above the cake, but not long enough to where the balloons touch the ceiling. Tie an equal number of balloons on each leg of the table.

    • 8

Stack napkins neatly and place them on one side of the cake. Lay the silverware next to the napkins -- forks on the left, knives on the right.
