How to Remove Vocals in Fruity Loops

How to Remove Vocals in Fruity Loops thumbnail
FL Studio enables you to remove vocals by using phasing and filters.

Because vocals tend to be in the mid-frequencies and are usually panned to the center of the mix, to remove them from a track you have to put the mid-frequencies through a filter, then “phase” them out by panning left to right and right to left. The FL Studios mixer, formerly known as Fruity Loops, has clearly labeled knobs for you to carry out this procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Select three tracks on the mixer. Assign one to the phase effect and give it a name to remind you that this is the track that will eliminate the vocals, such as “Vocal Removed.” The other two will be for the left and right channels.

    • 2

Turn down the sliders, for both the left-into-right and right-into-left channels, to -1. Now everything that is panned to the center of the mix (such as bass and vocals) is reduced. Because you don’t want to reduce everything, you will need to fine-tune the sound by adjusting the EQ.

    • 3

Mute the mid-frequencies, including the vocals, by using a bandpass filter. Apply phase canceling to the muted track.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the vocals are not panned to the center of the mix, you will not be able to remove them completely.
