DIY Donation Jars
Charity presence and donation jars are synonymous with large public events like sports games, carnivals and festivals, where the rhythmic rattle of small change reminds passers-by to dig deep and spare a contribution for a worthy cause. Also popularly used for neighborhood door-to-door charity collections and placed by the cash register in stores, donation jars may range from the obviously homemade to factory finished. Making your own donation jar is simple and inexpensive, allowing more money to go straight to the charity.

Find a sturdy, large clear jar. Large mayonnaise jars are ideal, and if it is glass ensure it is robust enough to survive regular use. Remove the label from the jar. If fragments of the label remain attached to the jar, soap and warm water will help to remove them.

Cut a slot 2 inches by 1/2 inch in the center of the lid to receive change and bills using the sharp knife. Using a ruler will ensure straight, parallel lines. If the lid is metal, file the rough metal on the underside of the lid where you made the incisions to reduce the risk of receiving cuts or scratches.

Bore two small holes on opposite sides of the jar lid using the corkscrew. Thread the string through either hole and tie the two ends together, creating a loop and a safer way of transporting the jar.

Decorate the jar and lid in a style appropriate to the charity. Use paint and stickers to liven the jar and catch the interest of passers-by. If appropriate, state clear information and contact details about the charity on the jar.

Tips & Warnings
If you are leaving the donation jar by the cash register at a store, attaching the jar to an immovable object with the string loop reduces the risk of theft.
Most events and larger stores require donation jars to feature clear contactable information about the charity in question for legal reasons.
