Many people feel that lying in a hammock is the most relaxing way to spend a summer afternoon. Hammocks can be set up in many different locations from your yard to the beach or woods. They are very comfortable spots to enjoy the weather, take a nap, or even spend the night. Macraming your own hammock is a big project that will take time. In order to ensure proper construction, you should have macrame experience.

  • 572 yards of hemp twine
  • 2 3-inch metal rings
  • 2 1-inch diameter dowels, 36 inches long
  • 2 3/4-inch diameter dowels, 36 inches long

Instructions

    • 1

      Cut your hemp. You need 44 cords that are 9 1/2 yards long, 12 cords that are 5 yards long, 12 cords that are 4 yards long, 12 cords that are 3 1/2 yards long, and 4 cords that are 1 yard long.

      Lark's head 6 of the 3 1/2 yard cords in the middle of one of the rings. On each side of these cords, lark's head 3 of the 4 yard cords. To lark's head, loop the cord at the halfway point then pull the two ends through the loop and tighten. Divide the cord into 4 sections and braid. The braids on the side should be 30 inches long and the middle braids will be 27 inches long.

      Attach the cord ends to the 1 inch thick dowel with a double half hitch. Working from left to right, attach the 9 1/2 yard cords as follows: Double half hitch one at the far left end. Double half hitch one between each cord of the far left braid. Quadruple half hitch 8 cords. Double half hitch one between each cord of the next braid. Quadruple half hitch 6 cords. Double half hitch one between each cord of the next braid. Quadruple half hitch 8 cords. Double half hitch one between each cord of the far right braid. Double half hitch one at the far right side. Using the ends, tie 4 rows of alternating square knots, securing with an overhand knot.

      Number your cords from left to right. Tie two square knots with cords 1 to 4, 5 to 8, and 3 to 6. This should create a 4 inch long "X." Repeat with cords 13 to 20, 25 to 32, and 37 to 44. Tie 4 inch half twist knots with the remaining cords.

      Attach all cords to the 3/4 inch thick dowel with a quadruple half hitch.

      Tie alternating rows of double square knots, 2 inches apart. Continue until piece is 75 inches long.

      Repeat Step 5. Repeat Step 4.

      Repeat Step 2. Attach to the hammock by repeating Step 3.

      Attach six of the 5-yard cords to the far left of the 3/4 inch thick dowel with a double half hitch. Tie two square knots with the ends, securing with an overhand knot. Braid down the side of the hammock and intertwine with every other row of square knots. When you reach the other dowel, double half hitch to attach and tie two square knots with the ends, securing with an overhand knot. Repeat on the far right side.
