How to Add a Black Background in Windows Movie Maker

Windows Live Movie Maker is an free entry-level video editing program for Microsoft Windows. Although the functionality of the program is basic compared to programs like Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas, the program lets you easily add videos, pictures and music to your project, create scene transitions and special visual effects, and edit the soundtrack. You can also create black backgrounds to use as breaks between scenes or as backgrounds to title or credit sequences.

Instructions

      Open Windows Live Movie Maker. Click the “Home” tab, then click “Add Videos and Photos.” Browse your file system to the location of the video files and graphic files you want to add and double-click them. You can hold the “Ctrl” key and click multiple files, then click “OK.”

      Drag the videos and picture files in the Storyboard window to put them in the order you want.

      Click the location in the Storyboard where you want to insert a black background. Click “Add Title.” Click “Background Color” and click the black color box. If you do not enter title text, the black background will display without text.

      Click the “Text Duration” text box and type how long, in seconds, you want the black background to appear in your video project. You can also click the “Start Time” text box and adjust when the black background appears in the project.

Tips & Warnings

  • Click “Edit” under “Video Tools” and click the “Fade In” or “Fade Out” drop-down menus to set a fade-in or fade-out speed, then put a few seconds of black background between scenes to have your scenes fade to black and then fade back in from black.

  • Type text in the Title tool to create a title or credit sequence with a black background.
