How to Make Couture Baby Headbands
Make your own couture headbands during your baby's nap time. Purchasing the materials from a craft or fabric store and then creating your own couture headbands for your baby is less expensive than buying already made headbands. Additionally, you can create your own one-of-a-kind design to match your baby's wardrobe or a particular outfit. Shorten an already-made adult headband to fit your child's head then add a bow or flower to the headband to create a distinct look.
Things You'll Need
- Non-slip adult headband
- Tape measure
- Sewing pin
- Sewing machine
- Hot glue gun
- 2-foot ribbon
- 1 alligator clip
- Over-sized plastic flower
Instructions

Headband
-
1
Lay a non-slip cotton adult headband flat on a table or hard surface. Since it is already sewn in a loop, the headband is already folded in half. Place a tape measure at the end of one fold and measure 8 inches. Mark this spot with a sewing pin. The total round length is 16 inches. This length is ideal for babies 6 to 12 months old.
-
2
Sew a straight seam across the headband at the 8-inch mark to shorten the length of the headband. Consider sewing several seams in the same spot to reinforce the stitch. Cut the remaining material not included in the 16-inch headband. Consider leaving about 1/2 inch of material.

3
Glue the extra fabric so it lays on the headband using a hot glue gun. This part of the headband will be covered up.
Bow
-
4
Lay the piece of ribbon flat on a table or flat surface.
-
5
Find the center of the ribbon using a measuring tape and mark it with an alligator clip. Two inches from the left and right of the center, fold the ribbon under, creating an "X" shape. The ends of the ribbon should cross about a quarter of the way up from the base of the ribbon.
-
6
Grab the alligator clip and fold the ribbon up towards the "X." Re-secure the alligator clip so it includes the additional ribbon.
-
7
Pick up the right leg of the "X," and fold in down over the alligator clip. About 2 inches of ribbon should cross over the clip. Repeat with the left leg of the "X," crossing this piece over the right piece. Remove and re-secure the center of the bow using the alligator clip.
-
8
Remove the alligator clip and scrunch up the center of the bow with your fingers. Using your other hand, tightly wrap a string around the center of the bow and tie into a knot. The knot should face the back of the bow. Hot glue the bow onto the center seam of a headband.
Flower
-
9
Pull off the green bottom from the plastic flower. This is the plastic piece that holds the flower together. Gently take apart the flower, removing each petal and lay each piece in the order it was removed.
-
10
Glue the biggest outer petal to the seam of the headband. Use enough hot glue to secure it in place.
-
11
Glue the remaining petal pieces in the order they were removed, from the second piece to second to last piece, using hot glue. Hold off gluing the last petal in place.
-
12
Fold the last petal in half lengthwise then widthwise before gluing it in the center of the flower. This petal serves as the new bud of the flower since you threw the plastic green piece away.
-
13
Let the glue dry before wearing.
