How to Edge a Praise Flag

An old fishing pole makes a wonderful way to fly the praise flag high.

Even if sewing is not one of your strong suits, accomplishing this project will get you praise. Or at the very least, get the praise flag edged. Using a sewing machine with a basic straight stitch is all you need to complete your praise flag. Once you have mastered the hemming technique you can make your own praise flags. This gives you the ability to choose your own flag fabric from a variety of colors, sizes, shapes and textures for a more personalized praise experience.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold each edge of the flag down ¼ inch twice. Pin the folded hem edge into place.
Complete one edge of the flag at a time around all four sides.

    • 2

Insert one edge of the flag into the sewing machine at a corner. Position the folded edge under the needle and lower the presser foot.

    • 3

Backstitch and sew with a straight stitch at the edge of the inside fold to the next corner. Stop with the needle in the down position ¼ inch from the edge.

    • 4

Raise the presser foot and turn the flag to sew the next edge. Lower the presser foot and continue to sew straight down the flag edge to the next corner. Repeat this until the edge is completed on all four sides.

    • 5

Backstitch at the end of the last side of the flag. Raise the presser foot and remove the flag from the sewing machine. Cut any loose threads away.
