How to Replace Volume Controls on Crate XT10s

The Crate X10 is a solid-state guitar amplifier that has a built-in dual-stage gain unit that makes the amplifier a great beginner amplifier for a budding rock guitarist. The amplifier has two separate volume controls. These rotary pots, technically called potentiometers, are labeled “Level” and “Master Level.” The “Level” adjusts the level of the distortion available though the gain unit while the “Master Level” controls the volume of the sound coming from the amplifier. The process for replacing either pot is the same.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Crate XT10 from its power source. Do not attempt to work on the amplifier with it plugged in.

    • 2

Pull the knob off the potentiometer. The knob presses onto the pot shaft, so pulling outward on it will release it from the shaft.

    • 3

Remove the screws that hold the back cover onto the amplifier and then remove the screws that hold the amplifier head into the shell. Pull the amp head out of the shell.

    • 4

Heat a soldering iron and then tin the tip of the iron by placing fresh solder onto the tip. Press the tip of the iron against the solder lugs mounted to the back of the volume pot. Pull the wires off the pot. Take note of the lug each wire connects to. You need to know this when you solder the wires onto the new pot.

    • 5

Loosen the hex-nut that secures the pot to the amplifier head and then discard the old pot.

    • 6

Place the new pot into the amplifier head and then secure it with the hex nut and wrench.

    • 7

Tin the tips of the solder lugs on the pot with fresh solder. Place the wires onto the correct solder lug and then solder the wires to the lugs

    • 8

Slide the amplifier head into the shell and then secure it with the screws. Place the back cover onto the amplifier and then secure it with the screws.

    • 9

Rotate the shaft of the pot counterclockwise. Slide the knob onto the shaft. The knob has a white arrow on it. The arrow must face approximately the 7 o’clock position.
