How to Root a Nook Color With a Mac
When you root your Nook Color e-book reader with an Apple computer, you need to use several terminal commands to prepare the microSD card for the rooted operating system. Root access on the Nook Color modifies the operating system so you can make changes to system settings and the file system, as well as use applications such as Gmail and the Android Market.

1
Download the free Auto-Nooter root image on your computer from XDA-Developers.com. Extract the Auto-Nooter image to a location you can easily find.
-
2
Plug your Nook Color in so it reaches at least a 20 percent charge while you are preparing the microSD card. Push your microSD card in to the computer's SD card reader or use a card-reading peripheral, such as a USB card reader. If your smartphone has a SD card slot, you can put the card in your phone prior to connecting it to the Mac.

3
Open "Applications" and "Utilities." Double-click "Terminal." Type "su" to give yourself superuser, or sudo, access to the command line. Press "Enter" to execute this command. Type "diskutil list" and press "Enter." Note the drive number for the microSD card in the list generated.
-
4
Type "diskutil unmountDisk /dev/diskX" and replace "X" with the card's number provided in the diskutil list. Press "Enter." Type "dd if=auto-nooter-3.0.0.img of=/dev/diskX" and press "Enter." The dd utility writes the Auto-Nooter image to your microSD card after wiping the card.
-
5
Turn off your Nook and disconnect it from the charger. Add the microSD card to the e-book reader. Connect the Nook Color to your computer with the USB data cable. Auto-Nooter installs itself and it does not require any user intervention. The Nook Color boots directly in to the rooted operating system instead of the default system.

Tips & Warnings
The Auto-Nooter image does not currently work with the Barnes and Noble system updates 1.2 or 1.3. Avoid applying the wireless Nook Color updates if you want to root your e-reader with Auto-Nooter.
