You can make basic alterations at home with a few sewing supplies.

Clothing styles can change with the seasons, but with some basic sewing skills to make alterations, you can keep your clothes updated. While the seams of shirts, skirts and T-shirts are typically sewn inside out so that the raw edges of the fabric are worn on the inside of the garment, trends sometimes dictate that these seams are sewn to sit the outside of garments. You can make an easy alteration to the seams on any of your garments to achieve this effect.

  • Seam ripper
  • Sewing pins
  • Sewing machine

Instructions

      Lay your item on a flat surface, right side out.

      Unpick the seam you wish to reverse with a seam ripper.

      Unfold the material along the seam so the raw edge of the fabric is facing outward.

      Pin the seam together using the fold in the fabric from the previous seam as a guide.

      Sew along the seam with a sewing machine. Sew slowly and remove the pins as you go.

    • 6

      Overlock the raw edges of the seam. Set your sewing machine on a zig-zag stitch to achieve the overlock the edges.

    • 7

      Iron the seam flat.
