How to Crochet a Beanie With a Magic Loop

How to Crochet a Beanie With a Magic Loop thumbnail
Crocheted beanies are a good way to use up leftover yarn.

Making a crocheted beanie is a simple and inexpensive project, well suited to beginners. Mastery of only two basic stitches is required: the slip stitch and single crochet stitches. The beanie begins with a sliding loop, sometimes called a magic loop, in the center of the cap. Spiral rows are worked around the loop so the cap has no seam. Most beanies can be completed in an hour or two, with only a few ounces of yarn.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

Make a sliding loop by wrapping the end of the yarn twice around the tip of your index finger. Gently pull the coiled yarn off your finger. Insert the crochet hook through the center of the coil. Yarn over and pull the hook through the coiled yarn. Yarn over and pull the hook through the loop on the hook.

Chain one. Do six single crochet stitches in the loop. Mark the last stitch of the first row with a stitch marker. Do not join. In round two, do two single crochet stitches in each single crochet stitch of the first round. Mark the ends of each round as they are completed. Pull the free end of the yarn in the sliding loop to close the circle.

    • 3

Crochet round three. Do one single crochet stitch in the first single crochet stitch from the previous round. Do two single crochet stitches in the next stitch. Continue alternating one, then two single crochet stitches as you work your way around round three. In round four, do one single crochet stitch in each of the first two stitches. Do two single crochet stitches in the third stitch. Continue alternating stitches in this pattern to complete round four.

    • 4

Crochet rounds five through 13. In each new round, increase the number of single-single crochet stitches by one, before crocheting two single crochet stitches in the same stitch from the previous row. At the end of row 13, the top of the beanie is completed.

    • 5

Crochet round 14 with one single crochet stitch in each stitch from the previous row. Stitch markers are not used after row 13. Continue working in a spiral until the beanie reaches the desired length. In the final round, slip-stitch around the entire opening. Trim and weave in loose threads.
