How to Crochet a Yo-Yo Stitch
A yo-yo stitch is a stitch pattern that creates round motifs of double crochet stitches. Assemble these motifs in a variety of different ways to create afghans, purses, headbands, belts or other home decor or fashion items. Use an I hook and worsted weight yarn to create 1.5 to 1.75-inch yo-yos. Yo-yos made with a border will be roughly 2.5 inches across. Use a larger hook and thicker yarn for larger yo-yos, and a smaller hook and thinner yarn for smaller ones.
Instructions

-
1
Chain three.
-
2
Slip-stitch in the first chain to join the round. This creates a ring into which your other stitches will be made.
-
-
3
Chain three. This counts as your first double crochet stitch.
-
4
Make 11 double crochet stitches into the ring.
-
5
Slip-stitch into the top of the chain-three stitch to join the round.
-
6
Make an optional third row by chaining three then making a single crochet stitch in the next stitch. Repeat that pattern around, making chains of three and a single crochet stitch in every stitch around the motif. This creates a wavy ruffle-like edging, making the yo-yo look more like a flower. Otherwise, tie off your last stitch.

Tips & Warnings
Use a different color of yarn for the border stitches. This makes each yo-yo look like a flower. It also gives you a way to tie each yo-yo together, physically and thematically. Yo-yos made in different base colors can all have the same border color, which makes the transition from one color to another less jarring. It also gives you an easy way to assemble the yo-yos.
Use a magic loop, or double loop, start to create yo-yos with no obvious center hole. A yo-yo made with an invisible start will be slightly smaller than one made in the traditional way.
Some patterns require that you assemble the yo-yos as you compete them. Read through all the instructions in your pattern before beginning to avoid having to remake any motifs.
