How to Do Calligraphy With a Nib

How to Do Calligraphy With a Nib thumbnail
Learning how to write well with a nib will take some practice.

Calligraphy is widely considered an art form -- one that has survived over centuries. Learning calligraphy is a good way to impress friends and family while creating one-of-a-kind works of art. Most calligraphy pens use a metal nib for transferring ink onto the paper. Beginners must learn how to properly write with a calligraphy pen nib to see good results, as the difference between writing with an ordinary ballpoint or felt-tip pen and a calligraphy pen nib is substantial.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick a calligraphy nib that you feel comfortable using. There are many types of nibs from which to choose, each with its own line style.

    • 2

Slip the calligraphy nib onto the reservoir and press in the metal tabs. The tabs should hold the nib tightly against the reservoir while allowing some slight up-and-down movement. Some calligraphy nibs feature both the nib and reservoir as one unit.

    • 3

Line the curved edge of the nib with the nib holder on the end of the pen. Push the nib into the pen until you come to a stop. Add ink into the reservoir with a dropper or the tip of a sable brush.

    • 4

Hold the pen at a constant angle as you create your strokes. The nib should not turn as you form lines and curves. Lead the nib gently across the paper. Do not push the nib across the paper, as doing so will create uneven lines and eventually damage the tip of the nib.

    • 5

Disassemble the pen and clean the nib with window cleaning solution and an old, soft toothbrush. Dry the nib with a soft cloth.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always handle the nib with care, to avoid bending the thin tip out of shape.
