How to Make Crochet Pompoms for Baby Booties
If you are making baby booties or want to add a touch of whimsy to booties you have bought for that special little someone, pompoms are the perfect thing. These pompoms are easy to make using supplies that are easy to find, and they will increase the cuteness of baby booties exponentially. Baby booties are too tiny for conventional pompom methods, so we will use a small crochet hook to accomplish this task.
Things You'll Need
- Cardboard
- Pencil
- Shot glass
- Penny
- Scissors
- 1 skein 2-ply yarn
- Small crochet hook
- Needle
- Thread
Instructions

1
Trace the top of the shot glass onto the cardboard. You can use poster board, a cereal box or other thin cardboard.
-
2
Place the penny in the center of the first circle and trace around it. Cut out both circles so that you have a small cardboard doughnut.
-
-
3
Place the cardboard doughnut on the leftover cardboard and use it as a stencil to trace a second doughnut. Cut that one out too.
-
4
Cut a 4-foot length of yarn. Stack the cardboard doughnuts on top of each other so that the holes align. Hold the end of the yarn against the outer edge of the cardboard doughnuts.
-
5
Using the crochet hook, hook the yarn and pull it though the hole in the middle of the two cardboard doughnuts. Continue winding the yarn around the cardboard doughnuts, making sure to go through the hole in the middle each time.
-
6
Continue to wrap the yarn around the cardboard, each new wrap should be snugly placed next to the last one. Keep wrapping around the doughnut until you can no longer pull the yarn through the hole in the middle of the doughnut.
-
7
Start to cut the yarn along the outer edge of the doughnuts, between the two pieces of cardboard. You will only be able to cut a couple of strands at once, so slowly work your way around the outer edge until all the yarn has been cut.
-
8
Cut a 6-inch piece of yarn. Pry the doughnuts apart slightly and wrap the 6-inch piece of yarn around the yarn wraps between the two cardboard doughnuts. Pull tight and tie a knot.
-
9
Remove the cardboard doughnuts. Trim the yarn so that it is all the same length and your pompom is perfectly round. Sew it onto the baby booties with a needle and matching thread.

Tips & Warnings
If you want an extra dollop of cute, make several pompoms and create pompom animals for the booties.
Be careful when cutting the yarn, it can be tricky and you don't want the scissors to slip and cause injury.
