How to Make a Stand for Paper Mache Parrots

A papier mache bird stand displays a parrot realistically.

Papier mache crafts can include all sorts of animal projects such as parrots. A papier mache parrot shows off bright, realistic colors. For even more realism, crafters should create an environment to display the animal. Every bird needs a perch to clean its feathers on. To make a papier mache perch or stand, use some of the same tools that helped you form the bird.

Instructions

    • 1

Tear newspaper into 1-inch strips. Vary lengths so you have both short and long strips. Add 5 cups of water and 1 cup of flour to a saucepan. Boil the mixture for three to four minutes, stirring until even consistency. Remove the saucepan from heat and let cool. Pour into a bowl. Dip newspaper strips into the mixture once you're ready to start covering surfaces.

    • 2

Cut out a square panel from a cardboard box. Cut out four strips of cardboard with a width equal to the square and a height of 2 inches.

    • 3

Cover the cardboard square and strips with two layers of papier mache. Set aside to dry.

    • 4

Cut the toilet paper rolls in half, and roll the cut rolls into a tight tube. Tape with masking tape or other strong adhesive. Stuff newspaper into each tube to make it firm.

    • 5

Stand one of the cardboard tubes onto another and tape them together. Tape three tubes together and set aside, and tape together another three.

    • 6

Form a "T" with the two sticks and attach them with tape. Cover the attached tubes with papier mache strips in a thick layer.

    • 7

Stand up the four panels and attach one panel to each side of the cardboard square with super glue. Paint the panels and square a light tan color.

    • 8

Paint the "T" stand dark brown. Cut a hole that matches the diameter of the tube in the center of the cardboard square. Push the "T" stand into the hole, and seal it with super glue around the edges.

    • 9

Glue the bottom of the parrot to the center of the "T" stand with super glue.
