Not all Android applications will run on a rooted Nook Color.

The Nook Color includes its own operating system that loads your digital reading content and accesses the online Barnes & Noble bookstore. A process called "rooting" allows you to install a specially-made version of Google's Android operating system, sometimes referred to as a "shell," on the Nook. Once the Android shell is installed, the Nook can load a number of Android applications, including Amazon.com's Kindle e-reader platform.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Download the WinImage application on your computer. Right-click the downloaded file and select "Extract Here" from the menu. Double-click the "WinImage.exe" file to launch the application.

    • 2

Download the Nookie Froyo disk image file and extract it to the download folder. A file called "nookie-froyo-SDIMAGE.img" will be extracted.

    • 3

Insert your microSD card into the microSD card reader and connect it to a USB port on your computer.

    • 4

Click the "Disk" menu in WinImage and select "Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on Physical Drive." Click the drive letter that corresponds to the USB card reader.

    • 5

Go to the "nookie-froyo-SDIMAGE.img" file when prompted by WinImage and click the "Open" button. The Nookie Froyo disk image file is written to the microSD card.

    • 6

Hold down the power button on the Nook to turn it off. Insert the microSD card in the Nook.

    • 7

Connect the Nook to your computer using its USB cable, but do not turn it back on. The Nook will boot automatically and load the Nookie Froyo disk image file as if it were a firmware update. The Android shell is written to the Nook, which will turn itself back on when the process is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • The microSD card can be erased and used as normal once the Android shell has been installed on the Nook.

  • Do not interrupt the rooting process on the Nook once it has begun.
