How to Run Propane to a Cooktop
Running propane to a cooktop is easy when the appliance is designed for propane. Making the connection between the propane tank and the cooktop requires several standard connections to ensure the gas does not leak. Cooktops designed for electric, wood or other forms of power are not compatible with propane, and you must make custom alterations for a propane conversion. The propane cooktop is typically recognizable by the gas ports and threaded-hose connection on the stove. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Locate the threaded outlet on the propane tank. Slide the coupling sleeve on one end of the gas line over the threaded outlet, and turn the coupling counterclockwise to secure the connection. Flexible and hard gas lines are used depending on the situation. Small tanks are installed close to the cooktop with flexible lines. Large tanks are installed outdoors with hard lines.

2
Run the propane line to the stove without turning on the gas at the tank. Bury hard gas lines or run the flexible line the short distance to the threaded stove inlet.

3
Slide the coupling attached to the end of the gas line over the stove inlet and screw clockwise to tighten the coupling. Complete the connection.

4
Turn off all burners on the cooktop. Follow the line from the inlet to the tank, and check for kinks and damaged sections. Stop and replace the line if any damage is present. Turn the tank valve to the "On" position to charge the line with gas.

5
Follow the line from the tank to the cooktop and smell for gas leaks. Turn off the tank valve immediately if you smell or hear leaking gas.
-
6
Turn on one burner on the cooktop and strike a match against the burner to ignite the gas. Run all of the burners and test the different heat settings to ensure the system is functioning. Turn off all of the burners.

Tips & Warnings
Double-check the couplings to ensure they are tight before turning on the propane. Most leaks occur near the coupling connections. Add Teflon tape to the threaded sections if a leak is present. Cover the line with soap and water if a suspected leak is present. Bubbles from the soap help pinpoint the leak.
Propane gas is flammable and explosive under pressure. Contact a professional if you are not comfortable installing the gas line and activating the cooktop.
