Many people just stick a bit into the drill and go to work. If you understand the purpose of different bits, though, you can save yourself time and effort, as well as make your tools last longer.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use a twist bit for general-purpose drilling. A high-speed steel bit is best, as it will stay sharp longer.

  2. Step 2

Drill concrete, brick, slate and plaster at low speed with a masonry bit.

  3. Step 3

Make holes in glass or ceramic tile with a spear-point bit at low speed.

  4. Step 4

Utilize a spade bit when you need a wide hole, and use a hole saw for even larger ones.

  5. Step 5

Buy a step bit for thin metals. This bit can make different-size holes because of its graduated cutting edges.

  6. Step 6

Use a brad-point bit for woodworking projects. The sharp point makes starting the hole easier.

  7. Step 7

Install countersunk screws in holes made with a countersink bit.

  8. Step 8

Use screwdriver bits for fasteners with slotted heads and Allen bits for fasteners with Allen heads.
