How to Crochet a Doily Headcovering

How to Crochet a Doily Headcovering thumbnail
A small round doily makes an appropriate headcovering for babies and little girls.

Just as with most other needlecrafts, crochet is best approached in small tasks like learning some basic stitches: the slip stitch, the chain stitch, the single, double and triple stitches. Once mastered, using the instructions and photographs from a basic crochet book, the beginner needs to look at crochet patterns to realize that they read from left to right, are full of abbreviations and are confusing looking but become clearer once the crochet begins. The simplest way to crochet a doily headcovering is to select a pattern for crocheting a round doily which always begins in the center.

Make 6 triple crochets in the next single crochet. Chain 6. Skip 5 single crochets. Make 6 triple crochets in the next space, chain 6, and repeat to the first triple crochet. Chain 1 and turn.

    • 10

Make 12 single crochets in each chain 6 space. Slip stitch to first single crochet made. Tie off and hide the string inside.

    • 11

Wash and block the doily over a rounded item such as a small round dish or some other object of the approximate size of the head. Add starch to stiffen cotton crochet thread if desired. When dry, secure the doily to the head with hair pins.
