How to Make a Lizard out of Clay
There are hundreds of different types of lizard species to be discovered in the natural world. Lizards live in deserts, rainforests, backyards and riverbeds, giving you a wide range of shapes, sizes and colors from which to choose. Sculpting a clay lizard is relatively simple depending on your familiarity with basic sculpting techniques and the level of detail you are pursuing in the model. Once sculpted, a clay lizard makes an interesting decoration for an office desk or bookshelf.

Instructions

1
Make your modeling clay soft and pliable by working it in your hands for a few minutes.
-
2
Separate the clay into five pieces – one large piece and four small ones. Use a modeling knife to make this more precise.
-
-
3
Roll the large piece of clay into a rough ball shape.
-
4
Roll the large piece of clay in your hands to create a long, round shape. One end of this shape is your lizard’s body and the other is his tail, so roll the tail end until it is much thinner than the body.
-
5
Form the lizard’s head by shaping it out of the other end of the body piece. Most lizards have a diamond-shaped head.
-
6
Roll each of the four small pieces of clay into long, skinny shapes. These are your lizard’s legs.
-
7
Add the legs to the body by pressing them into the sides of the lizard.
-
8
Add detail to your sculpture by smoothing the surface with a modeling spatula and adding scales and other details with a line tool.
-
9
Allow your clay to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Some clay will air dry, while some needs to be baked.
-
10
Paint your lizard with acrylic paint to add color and further details.
