How to Comb a Himalayan Cat

All cats need grooming, but Himalayan cats require daily combing and brushing. Because of the breed’s long fur, this cat is susceptible to knots, tangles and mats. However, if you properly comb and brush your cat on a regular basis, you can avoid unsightly, snarled fur that can lead to infection if your cat scratches or chews it.

Instructions

    • 1

Place an old towel on the floor to catch loose fur. Grooming your cat on the floor makes it easier for you to sit and hold the cat. Grooming on the floor also ensures that your Himalayan cat does not jump off the table or counter while you brush it.

    • 2

Put your cat on the towel. Soothe the cat by petting it and speaking to it in a soft voice. Gently place a hand on the side of the cat or underneath the chin to keep it in place. Alternatively, if your cat tends to run during grooming, place the towel in your lap and hold the cat on it with its body between your arm and your side.

    • 3

Start combing the cat’s fur with a wide-toothed metal comb designed to eliminate knots and tangles. Comb the fur in sections. Start at the bottom of the fur and gently comb your way up to the root. Avoid tugging on knots or matted fur. Himalayan cats have delicate skin and tugging is painful.

    • 4

Hold the cat up and comb the belly and under its legs. Use the same technique as in Step 3. Comb the tail and the long fur on the Himalayan cat's paws.

    • 5

Continue combing the cat until the fur is free of knots and tangles. If knots do not comb out, carefully cut them with a pair of scissors.

Tips & Warnings

  • Brush the cat’s fur with a slicker brush once you finish combing. The slicker brush gets rid of loose hair.

  • Bathe your cat once a week after combing and brushing. Once the fur is fully dry, comb and brush your cat.

  • If your cat is too matted, seek a professional groomer. The groomer can teach you proper grooming techniques and also recommend ways to calm your cat during the process.

  • Avoid yelling at your Himalayan cat or being forceful with it while grooming. The cat will associate negative feelings with the process, which can make it harder to establish a routine.
