How to Care for a Hagmann Trombone Valve

How to Care for a Hagmann Trombone Valve thumbnail
The Hagmann valve should be professionally maintained every two years.

The Hagmann valve is a rotary valve commonly found on trombones that were made after the early 90's. Like all instrumental valves, it needs to be lubricated regularly to ensure proper performance. Dry valves tend to stick and hinder the sound quality produced. Hagmann valves should be oiled weekly to ensure that they function properly. Oiling a Hagmann valve takes less than a minute.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the bottom cap of the valve by rotating and pulling on it simultaneously. Allow the saliva and moisture to drain out.

    • 2

Wipe off excess moisture inside the valve with a clean, soft cloth.

    • 3

Turn the trombone over and apply 10 drops of piston-type valve oil. Replace the cap.

    • 4

Turn the trombone upright again. Apply three drops of oil to the spring at the top of the valve.

    • 5

Work the valve several times while pressing the spring down. This will work the oil through the entire valve.
