Instructions

  1. Make Your Own Bikini

    • 1

Take your measurements using a measuring tape. Write down your waist, chest and bust measurements. Your chest measurement is taken by placing the measuring tape just below your bust.

    • 2

Select a bikini pattern that fits your measurements. If you have sewing experience, you might sketch your own bikini pattern.

    • 3

Cut the pattern to fit your measurements.

    • 4

Pin the pattern to the swimsuit material.

    • 5

Cut the fabric according to the pattern. You should be left with two triangular pieces of material for the bikini top and one larger piece of fabric for the bikini bottoms.

    • 6

Pin the fabric together in preparation for sewing. For the bikini bottoms, fold the waistline over half an inch and pin the fabric there to create a pocket for your elastic cord. For the bikini top, fold the bottom of each triangle under half an inch to create a pocket for the elastic cord that will go around your chest.

    • 7

Sew the bikini together by hand or with a sewing machine.

    • 8

Use a safety pin to feed your elastic cord through the pockets you created in Steps 6 and 7. Use one piece of elastic for the top and two pieces of elastic for the bottom.

    Wear Your Bikini

    • 9

Put the bikini on by tying the elastic strings together. Adjust the strings to change the fit. You're ready to head to the pool!

Tips & Warnings

  • Bikini patterns can be found at many craft and fabric stores.

  • Make your own bikini pattern by tracing a bra and panty set.

  • Most swimsuits are made from spandex-like materials, but other textiles are also cute and fashionable.

  • Test your fabric in water before using it to make a bikini.

  • When you cut your fabric, make sure it is loose and not stretched. Stretching the fabric while cutting it could affect the fit of your swimsuit.
