How to Do Basket Weaving With Frosting
When you look at a professionally decorated cake, detailed frosting application may seem like an overwhelming task. Few frosting techniques are as intimidating as basket weaving which covers the entire surface of a cake in a precise, layered web of frosting. However, if you use proper tools, basket-weave frosting is not nearly as complex as it appears. By following a basic pattern, even novice decorators can create the intricate detail of basket-weave frosting. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Place a flat, broad decorating tip on a piping bag. The opening of the tip should resemble the side view of a wide noodle, like fettuccine.
-
2
Fill the piping bag with frosting that is firm enough to hold a piped shape. Twist the top of the piping bag to keep frosting from squeezing out while you work.
-
-
3
Hold the bag to the cake so that the tip touches the surface. Position the tip at a 45-degree angle to the cake.
-
4
Squeeze the bag gently to pipe frosting. Move the bag toward yourself, making a straight, vertical line of frosting that is 1-1/2 inches long.
-
5
Pipe a horizontal line 1-1/2 inches long across the top of the vertical line, like you are crossing a capital T. Cover the top end of the vertical line with the horizontal line. Pipe an identical horizontal line across the bottom of the vertical line. Pipe a third horizontal line through the center of the vertical line. You should have three horizontal lines of frosting on top of one vertical line of frosting.
-
6
Pipe a 1-1/2-inch vertical line over the right ends of the horizontal lines. The new line should cover the ends of each of the horizontal lines so that they are no longer visible.
-
7
Pipe a vertical line to cover the left ends of the horizontal lines. You should now have three vertical lines and three horizontal lines of frosting. All six lines should be the same length. There should be four small squares of bare cake visible in the middle of the frosting grid pattern.
-
8
Place the decorating tip in the top right square of bare cake. Hold the tip gently against the side of the first vertical line. Pipe a horizontal line that is 1-1/2 inches long that fills the empty square, goes over the right-most vertical line and ends on bare cake. Repeat the process to pipe horizontal lines out of the three other bare squares within the frosting grid.
-
9
Continue alternating between 1-1/2-inch vertical lines and 1-1/2-inch horizontal lines as you work outward from your starting point. You should create a 1-1/2 inch-wide band of basket-weave frosting across the cake.
-
10
Repeat the entire process to create another band of basket-weave frosting. Continue making basket-weave bands until you have frosted the entire surface of the cake.
