Replacing your purse with a backpack can give you more space to carry large items and will also evenly position the weight of what you are carrying on your back rather than on one shoulder. This can be especially useful if you are traveling or are significantly increasing the weight of what you carry with you, such as when you return to school and need to carry books. 1
Choose a backpack that will be appropriate for the place where you will be using it. If you will be carrying lots of heavy, bulky items, use a backpack that has wide shoulder straps and a sturdy bag. If you will be carrying small personal items, choose a backpack that is built to be fashionable and reflects your personal style.

2
Remove items from your purse and put them in appropriately sized pockets in the backpack. Heavy items should go in the part of the backpack that will be worn close to your back. Small or sharp items should go in the part of the backpack that is further away from your back. This will make the backpack more comfortable to wear.

Check the purse to be sure you have removed all of the items you want to carry in your backpack. You will probably have more room in the backpack, so add those additional items where you have space.
-
4
Try on the backpack to make sure the straps are adjusted comfortably and the weight of the items in the backpack is distributed evenly. This is especially important if you will be carrying a heavy load.
-
5
Readjust the items inside and lengthen or shorten the straps if it the backpack wears uncomfortably. Repeat as necessary before you use the backpack.
