Instructions

    • 1

Fill the washing machine halfway full with lukewarm or cold water before adding the jacket. Add color safe detergent to the water and allow the machine to agitate the mixture. Add the jacket to the water only after the machine has agitated the water and detergent. Do not allow the machine to agitate the jacket and do not close the lid.

    • 2

Soak the jacket for no more than 15 minutes. Touch the jacket regularly to measure cleanliness or to inspect spot treating of stains. Once the jacket is clean, set the washing machine to drain and spin. Close the lid, but make sure that the machine does not agitate. If it does, reset the machine to drain, or forward the cycle ahead to spin.

    • 3

Set the washing machine to the rinse cycle for a high or large load. Once complete, set the machine to drain, spin and rinse at least two more times. If the fur is still very wet, set the spin cycle to run one additional time.

    • 4

Hang the jacket over a clothesline, shower rod or on a hanger to dry. Wet fur is nearly double its normal weight, so make sure that the surface you select is durable and sturdy. Let the coat hang to dry for 24 to 48 hours, periodically grooming the fur throughout the drying process by stroking it with your hand.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most fur or faux fur jackets require specialized care from a furrier or dry cleaner. Consult the label for cleaning instructions before attempting to clean the fur in your washing machine.

  • Long-haired furs are prone to knotting and matting, making these more difficult to clean.
