Knitting a Bedspread

Knitting a Bedspread thumbnail
Knitting can be enjoyed by people of almost any age.

Knitting a bedspread can add a personal touch to almost any bedroom more than any store-bought option. This project is also fairly easy because it involves nothing more than knitting straight lines to create a large rectangle. Therefore, this is a good project for the beginning knitter as she can become familiar with and well practiced in a basic knitting technique that will be repeated many times in creating a fairly large piece. To complete this project, you will simply need some basic knowledge in knitting terms.

Things You'll Need

  • Knitting needles (sized depends on the size of the stitch wanted)
  • Yarn

Instructions

  1. Casting On

    • 1

Cast on the number of stitches needed to span the width of your spread. Work with the shorter side of the project when doing this as working with fewer stitches will be easier.

    • 2

Pull loose several feet of yarn. This length will depend on the number of stitches to be cast on. More stitches will require more loose yarn.

    • 3

Wrap some of the yarn that is close to the ball of yarn around your thumb. Slide the knitting needle between the yarn and your thumb.

    • 4

Wrap the loose yarn away from you and then around your thumb and toward yourself between your thumb and the needle.

    • 5

Pull the yarn on your thumb over the loose yarn and the needle. Pull the loose yarn tight.

    • 6

Repeat steps 1 through 5 for each stitch you wish to cast on.

    Creating Stitches

    • 7

Insert the point of the needle with no stitches into the top loop on the other needle. Insert it from the bottom upward. The loop being used is the last loop, or stitch, that was cast on in the previous section. Therefore, it will be at the top of all the other loops.

    • 8

Wrap the loose yarn around the empty needle away from you and then between both needles toward yourself.

    • 9

Lift the empty needle over the needle with all of the stitches bringing with it the loose yarn that was wrapped around and between the needles in the previous step. The loose yarn should slide over the yarn with the cast on stitches.

    • 10

Pull tight the loose yarn to created and finish off your stitch.

    • 11

Repeat steps 1 through 4 for each stitch until all of the originally cast on stitches have been used.

    • 12

Turn the piece over and switch the sides of the needles to repeat the entire process creating a second row. Create rows until you reach the desired length of your bedspread.

    • 13

Cut the yarn with scissors when you have reached the desired bedspread size.

    • 14

Tie a knot with the thread that you have cut in the previous step and the last stitch. No specific knot needs to be used as long as it secures the end of the piece.
