How to Crochet a Blanket With the Ripple Stitch
The crocheted ripple or chevron pattern is a simple variation of rows of double crochet, used to make items such as blankets, scarves and shawls. Although this visually and texturally interesting pattern looks complicated, mastery of only two basic stitches, the chain (ch) and double crochet (dc) stitches are needed. In this pattern, repeating stitch increases and decreases form peaks and troughs, making a zig-zag pattern. After the foundation has been made, the entire blanket is made by repeating only one row pattern. Multiple yarn colors may be used to create an embroidered bargello effect.

1
Crochet a foundation chain, about 10 percent longer than the desired width of the finished project. The chain is a multiple of 11 stitches. The ripple pattern will make the width of the finished blanket a little shorter than the length of the foundation chain.

Do 2 dc (double crochet stitches) in second ch (chain) from hook, then 1 dc in in each of the next 3 chs. Skip 2 chs. Dc in each of the next 4 ch stitches. (Dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch, then dc in each of the next 4 ch. Skip the next 2 ch. Repeat the stitch pattern from the starting point across to the last 4 ch. Dc in each of the next 3 ch. Do 2 dc in last ch.

Ch 2 and turn to begin the third row. Repeat row 2. Note that at each peak, the ch 2 space forms a top point in the row. The bottom points are made when you decrease stitches by skipping two stitches from the previous row. Repeat row 2 until your blanket reaches the desired length.

Finish the blanket by trimming and weaving-in loose yarn ends. Add fringe, if desired.
