How to Knit a Triangle Shawl With Edging

Knitting a shawl can be as relaxing as wearing one.

Shawls have been a common knitting project for hundreds of years — and for good reason. They are simple to knit, warmer to wear than scarves and faster to finish than blankets. Shawls add a cozy touch when thrown over the back of an armchair and make a classy alternative to a warm sweater. Make a garter-stitch shawl beginning with a tiny square of knitting, which will form the center back of the shawl. You'll work increases every other row to form a large triangle. The shawl is trimmed with a pretty feather and fan edging on the angled sides of the triangle.

Things You'll Need

• 5 balls worsted-weight yarn, 3.5 oz. and 220 yards per ball
• Knitting needles, US size 7 or size to achieve 20-stitch gauge and 24 rows to 4 inches
• Stitch marker

Instructions

1. Cast on three stitches loosely. Knit six rows in garter stitch by knitting every row. Turn your work 90 degrees clockwise, and pick up three stitches from the side of your work. Turn your work another 90 degrees, and pick up three stitches from the cast-on edge. You now have a total of nine stitches on the needle. Work the next row by knitting all the stitches on the needle.

2. Work the next row by knitting three stitches, wrapping the yarn over the needle, knitting one, wrap the yarn over the needle three times, and knitting the last three stitches. Work the next row by knitting all 13 stitches on the needle.

3. Work the next row as follows: knit 3, wrap the yarn over the needle; knit 3, wrap the yarn over the needle; place a stitch marker after the wrap the yarn over the needle; knit one, wrap the yarn over the needle; knit 3, wrap the yarn over the needle; knit 3. Work the next row by knitting all 17 stitches on the needle.

4. Work the next row as follows: knit 3, wrap the yarn over the needle; knit to the marker, wrap the yarn over the needle, slip the marker; knit 1, wrap the yarn over the needle, knit to the last 3 stitches, wrap the yarn over the needle and knit the last 3 stitches. Work the next row by knitting all the stitches on the needle. Repeat the last two rows 89 times. Work the increase row one more time. You will now have 377 stitches. On the next row, knit 1, then increase one stitch by knitting into the front and back of the next stitch. Knit across to the end of the row. You will now have 378 stitches on the needle.

5. Begin working the feather and fan pattern as follows: Row 1, knit across all stitches. Row 2, purl across all stitches. Row 3, knit two stitches together three times, wrap the yarn over the needle; knit 1 six times, then knit two stitches together three times. Repeat across the row. Row 4, knit across all stitches. Repeat these four rows until the feather and fan section measures four inches long.

6. Bind off all stitches. Wash the shawl according to the directions on the ball band and lay it flat to dry.

Tips & Warnings

• Mark the right side of the shawl with a safety pin so that you know to work your increase rows when the right side, and the safety pin, are showing.
