How to Make a Watermelon Costume
In a world full of superheroes, princesses and pumpkins, a watermelon costume is a unique -- yet easily identifiable -- choice. The average American consumes more than 17 pounds of watermelon per year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The thick green skin of this refreshing fruit -- which is technically a vegetable -- conceals a sweet mound of pink flesh and contains just 25 calories per serving. Express your love for this popular piece of produce -- or turn your child into a mini melon -- with a homemade watermelon costume.

1
Measure your child -- or yourself -- from the shoulders to the knees, as well as around the fullest part of the body. Record these measurements.
-
2
Draw a triangle on each sheet of pink felt slightly longer than the shoulder-to-knee measurement and wider than your second measurement. Leave the bottom corners of the triangle blunt or slightly rounded for a better fit. Draw a rectangle on each piece of green felt equal to the size of the bottom of your triangle.

3
Cut the triangles and rectangles out of your green and pink sheets of felt and discard the scraps. Cut at least 20 seed-shaped pieces from the black felt and set aside. Use a sharp pair of scissors or shears designed specifically for cutting fabric.
-
4
Put the pink felt triangles on a table or other flat surface. Glue the green felt rectangle to the bottom of each triangle, and then flip the triangle upside down. The tip of the triangle should face downward. Let the fabric dry for a few minutes.
-
5
Cut a semi-circle on the top piece of green fabric -- this will be your neck hole. Turn the glued pieces over and cut a long slit -- at least six inches -- vertically through the green fabric. This makes it easy to take the costume on and off. Add a ribbon or Velcro, if desired.
-
6
Glue a generous amount of black felt seeds on each side of the pink felt. Allow the seeds to dry before trying on the costume. Complete the look with green face paint, if you wish.
