How to Make Paper Bride & Groom Cake Toppers thumbnail
Add a layer of lace to your paper cake topper for a decorative touch.

While some cake toppers are sentimental decorations, such as those bearing the photographs of the bride and groom, others take a humorous edge with the bride lassoing her groom to keep him from escaping their nuptials. Store-bought cake toppers are usually crafted from plastic or porcelain, but even paper cake toppers can withstand the rigors of a wedding reception. Heavy-duty paper products, such as cardboard or card stock, create more durable cake toppers than other paper products. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Keep photographs of other cake toppers nearby as a visual aid while tracing and cutting out the shapes for your cake toppers. Ideally, cake toppers should stand no more than three or four inches tall. Trace out the shapes for your cake toppers a few times. Cut out all layers and glue layers together for added reinforcement. Allow to dry.

    • 2

Trace clothing onto your cake toppers. Make an outline of the groom's coat and tie, for example. Use craft paint to add faces, hair and clothing. Allow the paint to dry.

    • 3

Cut out a small circle from card stock. This card stock will be used to create a bouquet for the bride cake topper. Paint a few different colored dots onto the circle, such as red, purple and pink, to create the bouquet. Attach a small strand of lace and ribbon at the bottom of the bouquet. Glue onto the center of the bride's body or near her hands.

Cut out a small piece of lace. Glue atop the bride's head to create a veil. You can also cut out lace and arrange it around the lower half of the bride's body to look like the skirt of her dress. Glue the lace to the body of the cake topper and allow to dry.

Paint the wooden disc a solid color, such as black, gray, or blue, or paint it with glitter. Allow paint to dry. Cover the disc with clear gloss varnish to keep the paint or glitter from getting onto the cake.

    • 6

Bend back the little section of card stock left at the bottom of each cake topper. If you set the cake topper down, it should balance and stay upright. This will serve as a base for your cake toppers. Apply glue to the bottom of the base and attach it to the top of the wooden disc. Allow to dry and place it on top of your cake.
