How to Dig a Trench for Tomatoes

If you've ever bit into a sweet, bright red tomato and experienced the superior taste and freshness, you know the value of growing homemade tomatoes. While you can grow tomato plants from seeds, a faster method is to simply transplant already growing tomato plants into your garden. When you transplant them, you can either dig a hole or a trench. A trench is suitable for tomato plants that are leggier and for tomato gardens in colder areas, or if you want to get ahead of the growing season. Does this Spark an idea?

Go to the area of your garden that gets the most sunlight. Mark in the soil with a stick the far left end of your planting area and the far right end. This will give you an idea of how long you want your trench to be.

Press the tip of your shovel in the middle of your designated trench area and scoop up some earth. Measure the depth of the incision you just made with a ruler. Your goal is to make a 6-inch trench. While some gardeners will be able to eyeball that depth, others will need to keep checking with their ruler to make sure they achieve the appropriate depth.

Continue digging in this manner until you've dug a trench that is approximately 6 inches deep. The trench just needs to be wide enough so you can comfortably place each tomato plant into the trench and then cover it up with soil.
