Make matching friendship bracelets for you and your best friend.

Make your own Christmas gifts, birthday gifts or every day gift for friends using embroidery floss. Children as young as four can learn to make a friendship bracelet to give to their best friends. Friendship bracelets are made by braiding, twisting or weaving strands of embroidery floss to create a colorful and wearable form of art. The bracelet is made to measure 1 inch shorter than the wrist so that there will be room to tie the ends together.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three different strands of embroidery floss into 3 foot long pieces. For a wider bracelet, cut two or three strands of each color.

    • 2

Tie one end of the strands together using an overhand knot. This is done by forming a circle with all the threads and inserting the end of the threads around the long portion and through the circle you just made. Then pull tight.

    • 3

Place the knot underneath the clip on the clipboard. This will hold the threads in place as you make the bracelet. If you have chosen to use multiple strands of each color, then pull the threads into the order you want them after clipping them under the clip on the clipboard.

    • 4

Pick up the first strand on the left and hold it down with your left thumb. Fold the remainder of the strand over top of the second strand from the left, wrap it under and bring it back up through the hole you just made.

    • 5

Pull only the first strand straight up to the top where it meets the clip on the clipboard. Do not pull so tight that he knot you just made goes under the clip, but just tight enough it stays in place. Repeat this knot once with the same strand.

    • 6

Complete the knot made in steps 4 and 5 using the third strand of the thread. If using three threads, this will give you one row of the bracelet. If using more than three threads, continue this same knot, picking up the next thread in line each time. Once the row is complete you will have one woven row that is one color. The first strand on the left that you started with is now the last strand on the right.

    • 7

Create the next row with the new first strand on the left and following the same knotting instructions.

    • 8

Continue creating rows in this manner until you have reached the desired length for the finished bracelet. If necessary, you can remove the bracelet from the clipboard to wrap it around your wrist and ensure it is the correct fit. If not, place it back under the clip and continue knotting.

Tips & Warnings

  • The strands can be braided using standard three strand or French braiding techniques by color or by mixing the colors as you desire.

  • Twisting can also be accomplished in multiple patterns by twisting any of the strands together, removing one or more and then adding in other strands and twisting again.
