Keep your whirlpool tub clean and bacteria-free with regular cleaning.

Disinfecting a whirlpool tub is slightly different than cleaning a regular bathtub. Soap scum, dirt and other particles can become stuck inside the jets, which can leave your bathwater dirty every time you turn them on. A whirlpool tub can practically disinfect itself with minimal effort on your part. You can do a quick cleaning every few weeks, or thoroughly clean out the jets by taking them apart and scrubbing them. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the hot water on full blast, plug the drain and allow your whirlpool tub to fill until it is at capacity. While most tubs will start draining before they overflow, it is still best to keep an eye on it to prevent any mishaps.

    • 2

Measure 1/2 cup of standard bleach in a measuring cup and pour it into the tub full of hot water. To this, add 2 to 4 tablespoons of powdered dishwasher detergent. Avoid using regular dish soap or liquid dishwasher detergent, as these products tend to foam up considerably, potentially leaving a mess on your floor. The bleach disinfects your tub, while the detergent helps to remove soap scum and dirt, leaving everything clean.

    • 3

Turn the jets on high and set a timer for 15 minutes. Check the tub occasionally to make sure that the water is not at risk of overflowing.

    • 4

Turn off the jets and drain the tub after 15 minutes, and then refill it with cold water. Once the tub is full, turn the jets back on and let it go for another 15 minutes to rinse out any bleach or detergent residue. Then drain it again.

    • 5

Unscrew the jet covers and remove the jets. Clean them with bathroom cleaner or dish soap thoroughly and rinse them with cold water. A rough sponge or toothbrush is often best for this. Put them back in place once they are thoroughly dry.

    • 6

Spray any stubborn stains with all-purpose bathroom cleaner and use a sponge to scrub them off. In many cases, its best to let the cleaner sit for 10 to 15 minutes to allow it time to break down the dirt. Avoid using cleaners that are not meant for the bathroom, as the chemicals in these products are usually too harsh for the coating on most whirlpool tubs.
