1
Trim the hole with a pair of scissors. Remove any stray threads and shape the hole into a uniform rectangle.
-
2
Measure the hole. Measure and mark a rectangle on a piece of denim or other sturdy fabric that is two inches wider and two inches longer than the hole. Use a matching piece of denim if you would like the patch to be less noticeable or a contrasting piece of fabric for a patch that stands out. Cut the fabric as measured.

3
Turn the jeans inside out and center the patch along the hole in the knees. The patch should have its right side facing down and should be one inch larger than the hole on each side. Pin the patch in place.
-
4
Baste along the outside edge of the patch with a loose basting stitch. Remove the pins and turn the jeans right side out.
-
5
Snip a quarter inch along the original hole in each corner, at a diagonal. Fold each raw side of the hole under and baste in place.
-
6
Turn the jeans inside out again. Sew along the inside of the patch, securing the folded outer part with a zigzag stitch. Trim the loose edges and remove the basting stitches.
