      Vacuum between the basement rafters with a vacuum hose attachment. Suck away as many spiderwebs and as much other dirt as possible. Drag the hose along the corners where the rafters meet the ceiling.

      Pour vinegar into a spray bottle. Spray the vinegar onto every basement ceiling joist. Allow the vinegar to penetrate the wood for one hour.

      Dampen a sponge with clean water. Wipe the sponge over the basement ceiling rafters to remove the vinegar and mold. Frequently rinse the sponge.

      Remove any stains the mold left behind by gently sanding the ceiling joist with a fine-grit sandpaper.
