How to Make a Wire Quilt Hanger

If you want to make a hanger for one of your quilts that won’t take up space, you likely want to make it out of wire. This is an inexpensive material and you probably have many already lying around the house in the form of coat hangers. In fact, you may not have to purchase anything at all. Once completed, you can hang your quilts and, due to the small nature of the wire, you probably won’t even see the apparatus that is holding them up.

Things You'll Need

  • Sewing machine (if necessary)
  • Heavy-gauge craft wire

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that your quilt has a hanging sleeve sewn into the back of it. This is a narrow sleeve that wooden or wire hangers are inserted into. If it doesn't, you can use a sewing machine and fabric to sew a simple sleeve into the back of it.

    • 2

Fold your heavy-gauge length of wire into a narrow loop. Make sure the length of the loop corresponds to the width of the quilt where you intend to hang it.

    • 3

Open the loop and insert the ends of it into the sleeve.

    • 4

Pull the loop of wire through the sleeve until the wire runs the length of the sleeve and the ends of the wire are sticking out of the ends of a sleeve.

    • 5

Connect the wire to a holder, such as a hook or a length of wood that can be mounted on the wall. This will secure the wire and the quilt. You can now hang the quilt as you see fit.
