How to Prune a Thundercloud Plum Tree

Known for its fragrant springtime blooms and purple-colored foliage, the thundercloud plum tree is a small, ornamental plum tree that reaches mature heights of just under 30 feet. It is a fast-growing, deciduous tree that thrives best in loose, well-drained soils that are slightly acidic. A short-lived tree, the thundercloud plum tree averages a 20-year lifespan when raised with proper care and regular pruning.

1. Prune the thundercloud plum tree in the late spring, after the tree has finished its blooming period. Use sharp, sterile pruning shears to remove any dead, damaged or diseased branches and stems first.

2. Sterilize the shears between each cut if you suspect that the tree has an infection to prevent spreading the potential disease throughout the tree.

3. Thin the densely foliated interior branches to increase the flow of sunlight and air throughout the tree. Be sure to remove all water sprouts from the thundercloud’s branches because these branches will inhibit the tree’s healthy development.

4. Cut away any suckers that have begun to develop at the base of the tree and its trunk. Make flush cuts at the base to completely remove the sucker and promote rapid healing of the wound.

5. Trim back vigorously growing branches and shape the canopy, if necessary, into a uniform, rounded shape. Irrigate the thundercloud plum tree immediately after pruning. Water the thundercloud deeply to allow the water to reach the deepest roots.

6. Prune the thundercloud plum tree, as needed, throughout the growing season. Prune only to remove dead, damaged or diseased branches as they appear. Otherwise, allow this plum tree to grow freely during the growing season for best health.
