Instructions for How to Crochet With Pomp-a-Doodle Yarn

Pomp-A-Doodle yarn is a specialty yarn sold by Red Heart, a division of Coats and Clark. This yarn is not like most other yarns; it is a series of pompoms connected by thin yarn. The nature of this yarn makes it awkward to work with, because you must work with the yarn between the pompoms, and avoid getting the pompoms caught up in your crocheting.

Instructions

Start with a size K crochet hook and attach the yarn to the hook with a slip knot. Leave a tail of yarn so you can work it in later when you finish off the piece. Only work between the pompoms. When you make the slip knot, there should be one pompom on each side of the knot.

Make 10 chain stitches. You can get two chain stitches between each pompom. Skip over the pompoms as you work, taking care not to get them caught up in the stitching. When you finish, you should have a crocheted chain with pompoms on one side and visible chain stitching on the other side.

Change over to a size I crochet hook. Just slide out the K hook and replace it with the I hook. You have to work in single crochet only with Pomp-A-Doodle yarn. There is not enough space between the pompoms to make larger stitches. You can get one single crochet stitch between the pompoms.

Insert the crochet hook into the second chain stitch from the hook, and make one single crochet stitch. You may need to hold the pompoms to the back of the crochet hook. Continue making single crochet stitches in each chain stitch. When you get to the end of the row, chain two and turn. Continue making single crochet stitches in each of the previous crochet stitches. This produces a solid block of pompoms.
