Place your workpiece in your lathe, following the manufacturer's instructions. Turn on the lathe and let the rotor come up to speed.

Grasp the handle of the skew chisel firmly in your left hand. Support the back of the blade with your right hand.

Hold the skew chisel perpendicular to the workpiece with the handle below the rotation point of the lathe and the blade of the chisel angled upward.

Press the tip of the skew chisel lightly into the workpiece, creating a line.

Turn the skew chisel slightly, so that the flat part of the blade is parallel to the surface of your workpiece.

Press the flat edge of the chisel into the workpiece, slowly moving the chisel across the workpiece until the tip of the chisel meets your score line.

Move the chisel back and forth toward and away from the line, deepening the curve until your desired ball detail is achieved.
