How to Make "Super Mario Bros." Party Hats
Reminiscent of the pointed hats worn by princesses, wizards and witches, conical party hats have been a birthday party tradition for generations. Party supply stores carry party hats to match most themes. However, if you want to make your own, you can control the exact look of the hats. For example, if you are throwing a “Super Mario Bros.” themed party, create a Mario-inspired hat in little time using red poster board. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Red poster board
- White construction paper
- Black marker
- Hot glue
- 2-inch white pompom
- Hole punch
- 1/4-inch ribbon
Instructions

1
Draw a 12-inch-by-12-inch-by-18-inch triangle on a piece of red poster board. After you draw the triangle, draw a curved arc on the 18-inch side, extending outward from the triangle. Make the center of the arc 2 inches from the center of the 18-inch line of the triangle, creating a shape similar to an ice cream cone with a small scoop of ice cream on top. Cut out the shape to create the base for the party hat.

2
Cut out a 4-inch-tall oval from a piece of white construction paper. Make the width of the oval 3 inches. Write a 3-inch-tall letter "M" – for "Mario" – in the center of the white oval using a black marker.
-
-
3
Apply hot glue to the back of the oval. Press it to the center of the red poster board triangle.
-
4
Twist the triangle into a cone shape by bringing the opposing corners towards one another, just overlapping the edges. Fold it so that the 18-inch side is the open end of the cone shape.
-
5
Apply hot glue along the edge of the cone where the sides overlap. Press them together to seal them.
-
6
Apply hot glue to the bottom of a 2-inch white pompom. Press the pompom to the top point of the hat.
-
7
Place the hat on your head with the large "M" in the front center. Mark on the sides of the hat where your ears are. Use a hole punch to make one hole on either side of the hat where the ear marks are.
-
8
Cut two 10-inch-long pieces of 1/4-inch-wide white ribbon. Feed the end of one of the ribbons through the outside of one of the punched holes. Tie a knot in the ribbon on the inside of the hat to secure it. Repeat the process with the other ribbon through the opposite hole. Tie the two pieces of ribbon together to secure the hat on your head.
