Never let the flag touch the ground.

Displaying the American flag on your front porch is an act of patriotism that shows support and love for your country. Believe it or not, there is a right and a wrong way to display the flag. Since the first flag was sewn by Betsy Ross in 1776, there have been rules and regulations in regards to displaying the American flag. Before hanging the “Stars and Stripes” on your front porch with pride, install a flag pole so you can properly display it.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the flag pole mounting bracket near the top of the porch support beam on which the flag pole will be installed. If you have a brick porch, position the bracket in a location high enough that allows the flag to hang freely without touching the ground. The flag pole holder should face upward.

    • 2

Mark the mounting holes with a pencil.

    • 3

Drill holes into the pencil marks using a power drill equipped with the appropriate drill bit. Use a standard drill bit for a wood porch and a mortar bit for a brick porch.

    • 4

Align the mounting holes on the bracket with the drilled holes on the porch.

    • 5

Insert an appropriate screw into each of the holes.

    • 6

Tighten the screws using a drill equipped with a screwdriver bit.

    • 7

Turn the nuts on the flag pole holder counterclockwise until they are loosened far enough to make room for the flag pole.

    • 8

Insert the flag pole into the sleeve on the top of the American flag so the blue square with stars is nearest the top of the flag pole. Push the top edge of the flag as close to the top of the flag pole as possible. This is known as the “full mast” position and is the proper way to display the flag under normal circumstances. On certain days, hang the flag at “half mast,” by centering the flag on the flag pole. Fly the flag at half mast if the president, vice president, a chief justice (current or retired), a supreme court justice, a secretary of a United States Military company or governor dies. The flag is also to be flown at half mast on Peace Officer’s Memorial Day, Memorial Day, Patriot Day and Pearl Harbor Day.

Hook the fabric loops on the flag to the clips on the flag pole.

    • 10

Insert the flag pole and turn the nuts on the flag pole holder clockwise to secure the flag pole to the mounting bracket.
