Instructions

    • 1

Use a screwdriver to take the aluminum toy apart. This enables you to clean the corners and any other details more efficiently.

    • 2

Remove any dirt or dust with a bulb with a brush attachment. These are available at camera supply stores. Scrub the dirty area gently with the brush section. Blow the dust off the part with the bulb. Sometimes this is all that is necessary to clean the train.

    • 3

Add warm water and a squirt of mild dishwashing liquid to a sink basin and swish the water around.

    • 4

Place the end of a cotton swab into the soapy solution. Rub it in a gentle circular motion on an inconspicuous area of the aluminum. If the paint or other finish does not dissolve or fade, it is acceptable to clean the aluminum in this manner. The paints used on the Lionel trains may watermark or turn white, according to e-Train. The lettering is often a dye. It may dissolve as soon as water touches it. Test a tiny spot before washing the entire lettering.

    • 5

Dip a scrub brush into the cleaning solution. Clean the aluminum with the brush carefully. As you clean each area, watch for any problems with the solution and stop immediately if you spot any.

    • 6

Rinse the Lionel aluminum and dry it gently with a soft cloth. Set it in a well ventilated area to dry. This ensures that all the nooks and crannies dry well and don't rust.

Tips & Warnings

  • An old toothbrush is another alternative to remove dirt and debris. Toothpick are effective in removing dirt particles in tight places, but you must use them very carefully to prevent loosening paint or decals. Some lettering does not withstand cleaning.

  • Lanolin hand cleaner is also effective in cleaning the aluminum. Choose one that does not contain perfumes, abrasives or other additives. Apply it with a cleaning cloth or cotton swab and then wipe it off immediately and thoroughly.

  • Store the cleaned Lionel trains in a curio cabinet or other location that is dust-free. If you display them in another area, dust them regularly to prevent buildup.
