How to Make a Stove Pipe Hat out of Construction Paper
Abraham Lincoln is as famous for his black stovepipe hat as he is for his beard. If you are walking students through the events of Lincoln’s presidency and want to take a break for a simple craft project, creating small stovepipe hats is an excellent method for getting away from lectures and helping your students get some hands-on experience. Crafts activities teach students the importance of following directions and the intricacies of dealing with materials like scissors, paper and glue.
Things You'll Need
- Paper plate
- Coffee can
- Black paint
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Black construction paper
- Glue
Instructions
-
-
1
Trace a circle on the paper plate by outlining the coffee can with a pencil. Cut the circle out of the plate to create a simple hatband.
-
2
Paint the paper plate black, and work on other parts of the project while it dries.
-
-
3
Take a large piece of construction paper and roll it into a large cylinder, horizontally. Apply a thin layer of glue to the top of the construction paper and glue it to the bottom of the same page, folding it under to create a paper tube.
-
4
Place the paper tube on top of the paper hatband and line it with glue to stick the two pieces together.
-
5
Glue several layers of black construction paper over the tube. This makes the hat thicker and allows the glue on the hatband to stick more easily to the tube.
