How to Wire a Steel Building
Buildings using steel studs have different wiring requirements than those using standard wooden studs. Electrical wiring code standards dictate slightly different practices, based on different stud materials. However; following the right steps ensures that code is met and the wiring is safe.
Things You'll Need
- Drill
- 1-inch drill bit
- Romex electrical wire
- Plastic bushings
- Drill
- Philips bit attachment
- Sheet metal screws
- Metal junction box
- Philips screwdriver
- Hammer
- Strain relief clamp
- Cover plate
Instructions

1
Drill up through the footer of the room you wish to wire, using the drill and 1-inch bit. Push the Romex through the footer.
-
2
Snap a bushing into the lowest set of oval holes in the metal studs that the wire must transverse horizontally. String the Romex through the bushings towards the stud where the junction box is slated for installation.

-
3
Screw the junction box to the metal stud at standard mounting height, using the drill and sheet metal screws.
-
4
Knock out the perforated slug on the side of the junction box with a screwdriver and hammer. Slide the strain relief clamp over the Romex.
-
5
Screw the clamp into the side of the junction box. Push enough of the Romex into the box for easy access, while minimizing excess that may prevent easy insertion after terminating the outlet or switch.
-
6
Secure the clamp to the Romex by tightening the Philips screws around the clamp. Screw the pre-construction cover plate to the junction box.
