Pilot lights ignite the burner when gas is released.

Modern gas ranges come equipped with electronic starters that eliminate the need for pilot lights. Older models, however, contain a pilot light that ignites the burners when they are turned on. Sometimes, boiled-over food seeps around the burner and puts out the pilot light. When this happens, cleaning the spill and relighting the pilot light restores your gas range to normal working order. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

  1. Stove Top

    • 1

Remove the grates covering the burners on the stovetop.

    • 2

Check that all burner knobs are in the off position.

    • 3

Lift the top of the stove and prop it open with the metal brace inside the stove. This brace swivels to lock in place and hold the stove top open.

    • 4

Find the pilot lights. They are typically between the front and rear burner on both sides of the stove.

    • 5

Light a match or lighter and light the pilot light.

    • 6

Close the cover to the stove and reassemble the burner grates.

    Oven

    • 7

Check that the oven knob is in the off position.

    • 8

Remove the metal covering at the bottom of the oven by pulling it upward at the front. This exposes the oven burner and pilot light.

    • 9

Find the pilot light at the rear of the oven. Typically the pilot light lies at the farther end of the burner near the back of the oven.

    • 10

Light a long match or candle lighter. Hold the flame beneath the pilot light. If the pilot light does not light immediately, keep the flame in place. Some models contain a heat sensor or thermocouple that must be activated before the valve opens to allow gas to the burner. This may take 15 to 20 seconds.

    • 11

Reassemble the parts of the oven.

Tips & Warnings

  • Light a piece of spaghetti if you do not have a long match or candle lighter. It will burn long enough to light the pilot light.

  • Do not turn on the burners or the oven until the stove is reassembled.
