How to Sanitize Floor Drains With Bleach

Don't forget to sanitize the floor drain, too.

Some utility rooms, bathrooms and basements have a floor drain. These drains can become a haven for bacteria, especially If you had a flood or sewage backup, or perhaps an animal had an accident and you flushed the contaminated materials down the drain. Fortunately, with the help of just a little bit of bleach, you can disinfect your drain without much effort. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

• Bleach
• Bucket

Instructions

1. Clean and sanitize the the rest of the room and floor, if applicable, before you clean the drain, recommends Iowa State University.

2. Pour approximately 1 cup of bleach directly down the floor drain. Let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes.

3. Fill a bucket with hot water and pour it down the drain slowly to flush the bleach and complete the cleaning process.
