DIY Oak Headboards

Oak headboards are a durable and attractive option for the head of your bed. Instead of purchasing an oak headboard, you can easily make your own. Although you could make the headboard from new oak boards, a more environmentally conscious and stylish option would be to use a reclaimed oak door as a headboard. The reclaimed door will be full of character and can create an eclectic appearance for your room. Orient the door horizontally and mount it against the wall for a solid oak headboard to accent your bed. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the door on a work surface with the side that will be facing out from the wall facing up.

    • 2

Remove the door hardware from the door by removing the screws with a screwdriver. Lift off the hardware once the screws are removed, and set it aside.

    • 3

Sand the door lightly in the same direction as the wood grain using a fine-grit sanding pad. Clean the surface of the door with a tack cloth to remove all of the sanding dust.

    • 4

Spray on two even coats of lacquer, allowing at least four hours between coats. Wait 24 hours for the final coat to dry.

    • 5

Move a stud finder across the wall in the selected location for headboard. Mark the location of the wall studs onto the wall with a pencil.

    • 6

Center the door on the wall at the height you would like it to be located, and hold it in place. Drive four evenly spaced pan head wood screws through the door into the wall at each stud location.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use furniture-grade oak plywood in place of an oak door if you would like a more streamlined headboard.

  • Wear eye protection when woodworking to help prevent possible injury.
