How to Make Rolled Satin Ribbon Rose Bows

Create a cute rose hair ornament using satin ribbon. Rolled ribbon creates a rosebud and a large bow onto which it can rest. The two pieces are attached to a small plastic barrette for easy clipping into the hair. Use this technique to create baby barrettes in multiple colors. Satin ribbon is available at any craft supply store and flexible floral wire is found with the flower arrangement materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out 1/2 yard (18 inches) of satin ribbon flat on the table. Find a point approximately 2 1/2 inches from an end of the ribbon. Lift the end of the ribbon and fold it over so that a corner is created on that found point. Note that the end of the ribbon should now be pointing down.

    • 2

Take hold of the downward pointing edge of the ribbon. Twist it to the right for four turns, causing the folded corner on the ribbon to start to create a roll.

    • 3

Take the opposite end of the ribbon, the one that hasn't been rolled, and fold it under the straight length of ribbon so that its edge points downward and to the left. Continue rolling the other side as described in Step 4 until you almost reach the new fold.

    • 4

Take hold of the ribbon tail created in Step 3 and fold it up over the straight ribbon so it is pointing up and to the left. Continue the rolling action until you reach the end, allowing the folded ribbon to create petals around the exterior.

    • 5

Secure the loose end when you reach the end of the ribbon. Twist the end around the bottom of the rose and secure into place with a small piece of flexible floral wire.

    • 6

Cut 29 inches of ribbon into a 24-inch section and a 5-inch section. Loop one end of the 24-inch section until it starts a bow then bring it around again to create another loop. Repeat the loop once more.

    • 7

Thread a needle and stick the needle through the center of the forming bow. Pull the needle through then wrap the thread three or four times across the center. Tug down on the thread to create the pinched middle of the bow. Knot the thread and cut off excess.

    • 8

Roll the 5-inch section of ribbon until it forms a long thin log. Wrap the log around the pinched center of the bow to hide the thread. Sew this wrapping ribbon together at the back with a simple stitch.

    • 9

Place the ribbon rose at the center of the bow and sew the two together, sticking the needle in through the backs of both pieces. Place the barrette behind the bow and sew into place.
